As part of ISB Leadership Summit, a panel discussion was organised on ‘The Road to 2019’, at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad Campus, here today. The objective of the session was to understand various issues that the political parties need to address in the context of the upcoming union and state elections.

The policymakers’ panel consisted of senior representatives from various political parties - Janab Asaduddin Owaisi, Member of Parliament, AIMIM; Shri K Vishweshwar Reddy, Member of Parliament, TRS; Shri Nadendla Manohar, Former Speaker of AP Legislative Assembly, Indian National Congress; Shri N Ramchander Rao, Member of Legislative Council, Telangana, BJP; Shri Ram Mohan Naidu, Member of Parliament, TDP. The session was moderated by Shri T S Sudhir, Senior Journalist.

All the panellists urged the youth to take the process of elections seriously and cast their valuable votes. It is generally perceived that the youth in India is repulsive to vote and there is a unanimous need to change this perception. It was mentioned that the available option of NOTA is a good option but must be linked with the idea of compulsory voting.

While discussing on mingling religion and politics, there was a mixed opinion among the policymakers’, as some of them urged that it will not be fair to link religion and politics, but others found it inevitable, as they felt that religion and populist politics would continue to dominate Indian politics.

While talking about the upcoming union elections in India, all the political representatives shared their perspectives.

  • Janab Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM: “Coalition government in India will ensure inclusive economic growth.”
  • Shri K Vishweshwar Reddy, TRS: “Though we have fairly good relations with BJP at the Centre, we are rivals at the State. I am also a strong advocate of a populist policy, as it also helped the economy to grow.”
  • Shri Nadendla Manohar, INC: “Congress aspires to have friendly relations with the regional parties and have a common minimum agreement that would last for five years.”
  • Shri Ramchander Rao, BJP: “The success of coalition politics depends heavily on the leadership. The coalition system in India was successful only under the leadership of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.”
  • Shri Ram Mohan Naidu, TDP: “TDP is upset about the unfulfilled promises of the BJP government for the new State of Andhra Pradesh, though we certainly carry an NDA legacy.”

Earlier, TS Sudhir, a reputed journalist who moderated the session, asked each of the panellists about their journey and entry to politics.

  • Janab Asaduddin Owaisi: “Certain unfortunate incidences in the past urged me to enter politics and continue working for the cause that my party urges for.”
  • Shri K Vishweshwar Reddy: “Joining politics was not aspirational, but my interests in grass-root level work on promoting apprenticeship got me into politics.”
  • Shri Nadendla Manohar: “I had a political background and my interests in promoting participatory democracy strengthened my interests in politics.”
  • Shri Ramachandra Rao: “Though from a non-political background, I had the passion to join politics since childhood and it got strengthened through student politics.”
  • Shri Ram Mohan Naidu: “In order to get strongly connected with my father, who died in an unfortunate road accident, I chose to get into politics.”

The ISB Leadership Summit saw an enthusiastic participation by over 400 students and other invitees from the twin-cities.
