The Special Interest Group (SIG) on Comparing Business in China and India held a Guest Lecture on the topic - ‘China Today’ on August 1, 2017. Shri Shivshankar Menon, Former Foreign Secretary was the speaker for the talk.

Professor G. Venkat Raman, Faculty, IIM Indore introduced the guest.

Shri Menon’s talk revolved around what China is like today and what impact does the country has on the world. Discussing about China’s development in the last 30 years, Shri Menon said, ‘No other country has developed as fast as China. India also has made tremendous progress in various sectors like manufacturing, security, economy, etc. But we still aren’t able to compete with China in all the fields. China is catching up at a fast pace with other countries—being the largest manufacturer of various products, being the largest trading nation, having the second largest military budget in the world, etc.’

Shri Menon also discussed the variations in China’s economy with respect to its shift in domestic markets and economy. ‘China is now more important to the world economy than ever before. Half of the world’seconomic growth in the recent years came from four counties, and China topped the list’, he said. He noted that the degree of centralization going on in China has increased. The country’s own future now also depends on shaping the future of rest of the countries.

He then also discussed about the India-China relations. He said that the two countries have been successful in managing the relations since the late 1970-80s. ‘There have been various differences among the nations, but there are areas where we have and we can work together—even at international levels’, he said.

He concluded saying that sharing and discussing about the core interests of individual nations can help in maintaining the relationship between two countries peacefully.

The talk was followed by a Q&A and was attended by faculty, staff and students of IIM Indore.
