MDI Delphique 2013-14 concluded, themed on Service to Humanity

Gurgaon 6th January 2014:The 17th edition of MDI’s flagship National Management Convention, Delphique, was held between 3rd and 5th January, 2014, on the theme HumanitatisObsequim, which means “Service to Humanity”. The three day convention is a confluence of three events – The Knowledge Panel discussions, Vincenza - An International Business Plan competition cum mentorshipprogramme and Cerebro - A National case study competition on “Entry Strategy for Wealth Management Firm in India”.

 

The quality of research done by the knowledge panels (across domains as Finance, Operations, Marketing, Communications, HR, Strategy and Analytics) is ensured by providing faculty mentorship to the students. Their intellectual horizons are also widened by, a high profile panel discussion on the research by the who’s who of the corporate world, on the event day.

 

This year’s partners included corporate giants like Jindal Power, PowerGrid Corporation, Western Union, IBM, Deloitte, PwC, Cognizant, Britannica, Evalueserve, exchange4media, Fortis HealthCare, 91springboard.com,MyBox, Indian Angel Network ,Stern Fisher, BusinessWorld, MBAClubIndia, LogoImpressions.in,Twenty19 and Knowafest.com,

 

The inauguration was presided over by Prof. Mukul Gupta (Director) and Chief Guest - Mrs. RenanaJhabvala, Padma Shri awardee and former Chairperson of SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association), who spoke of the dire need for economic prosperity, but not at the cost of unruly competition. Co-operation, she said, has to be the key driver for this change. The ceremony was also graced by Prof. Gita Bajaj (Chairperson, PGPM), Prof. JyotsnaBhatnagar (Chairperson, PGP-HRM), and Prof. Anil Anand Pathak (Chair, Student Affairs).

 

The business end of the convention started offwith knowledge partners IBM and Western Union conducting their respective panel discussions. The HR panel, in association with Knowledge Partner IBM, discussed “HR Analytics and its impact on employee engagement & employee retention.” The team presented its research on understanding HR analytics and its usage in the present business context. The team then put forward its recommended plan of action.  The Finance and Operations Knowledge Partner for Delphique 2013 was Western Union. The topic was‘Creating Financial Inclusion through Socially Innovative Products and Changes required in the Existing BFSI Infrastructure and Regulatory Framework of India’. A team of 6 students presented its research conducted over a period of 2 months.

 

The second day saw four panel discussions with Deloitte and Evalueserve conducting their panel discussions in the morning.Deloitte, the Knowledge Partner for Strategy, pursued discussion on the topic "Emerging Trends in Virtualization and Effects on IT Asset Management". The student team presented its findings on virtualization, its benefits and challenges, emerging trends, strategic planning required for its implementation, managing the virtual environment, and the competitive landscape to an august panel consisting of Prof. MeetaDasgupta (Professor, MDI), VishwamDhaveji and Akash Gupta (Manager,Deloitte) and PrashantUpadhaya (Director, Technology Aricent). The panel lauded the efforts of the presenting team and addressed the various apprehensions and potential pitfalls raised by the team's comprehensive presentation. The Analytics panel discussion of Evalueserve was on the topic, “How Are Knowledge Processes Likely To Evolve In The Next 5-7 Years Due To Technology Advancements?” and consisted of Mr. ManojMadhusudhan (Global Head of Operations, EvalueServe), Mr. Aditya Jain (Senior Manager, Boston Consulting Group) and Mr. Titir Pal (Associate Director, Absolut Data). The research findings began by introducing the audience to landscape of the KPO Industry - currently a USD 20 billion industry touted to become USD 30 billion by 2016. According to Mr. Jain, the major challenges were the processing of data that is not clean, unstructured, that which cannot be consumed in raw form and does not provide a complete picture. Mr. Madhusudan said that the biggest benefits of analytics are the reduction of time to market, predictive analytics directing decision making, thus replacing traditional market research.

 

The afternoon session started withthe Health Care panel, by Fortis. Graced by Mr. Daljit Singh,President of Strategy and Organizational Development at Fortis Healthcare , Dr. ShavetaDewanLead, Apollo Quality Program and Special Initiatives at Apollo Hospitals Group and Prof. JyotsnaBhatnagar,the objective of the panel was to look into the workings of hospital facility from a management perspective and discuss about the growing importance and significance of the hospital administrator role. The team discussed about the drivers of the hospital industry in India and medico and non-medico administrative roles. The discussion was then opened to the panel. Putting forward his views Mr.Daljit pointed out the huge gap in demand and supply in the healthcare sector and the fact that there is still a lot of gap that needs to be bridged to help fulfill all the demand.

 

The Finance/Analytics panel with PwC, discussed "Combating fraud in benefits transfer schemes of the government." The esteemed panel comprised of Mr. AnuragDua (Managing Consultant, PwC India), ShantanuChakraborty (VP, Fraud Control and Investigation, GE Analytics), Dr. SangeetaChhabra (Researcher, Govt. Consultant, Head, Major Cloud Computing Company), AadityaGutgotia (VP, Axis Capital) and Prof. SajalGhosh (Faculty Mentor, MDI). The panel had a healthy discussion afterwards where they put forward their suggestions based on their rich experience. Some of these suggestions included more Public Private Partnerships, use of micro ATMs in rural areas and use of Big Data Analytics.

 

The final day of the three day event began with a discussion by Exchange4Media, on the topic "Greening Advertising Media Entertainment (G.A.M.E)”. The panel consisted of eminent media personalities including Mr. Sunil Kumar (President, Exchange4Media Group), Ms. BabitaBaruah (Executive Business Director, JWT), Mr. Devdutt Das (Airport Manager, Times OOH), Ms. Maushree Joshi (Content Head, GroupM) and Prof. RituShrivastava (Asst. Professor - Marketing, MDI). The students presented their comprehensive findings on the above topic, which were sprinkled with facts and figures in just the right amount, to keep it lively and intriguing. The key takeaway was the unfortunate general tendency to confuse cost cutting cutting measures with environment sustainability practices. Ms. BabitaBaruah said that we needn't worry about taking from the planet, as long as we strive to give it back, and then some. Mr. Sunil Kumar highlighted the need to broaden the scope of thought when it comes to sustainability, while saying that Media, at the core, is a very creative industry, and must continue to stick to its core job - which is to do what is best for the client.

 

The Final Research Panel of Delphique 2013-14 was Encyclopedia Britannica (Marketing) Panel. 
The topic for research was "Research On The Usage Of Internet And Other Reference Resources By Students In Curricular And Co-Curricular Learning In Middle And Secondary Education India." . Mr. Amit Kapoor, Head - Digital Learning, South Asia, Encyclopedia Britannica, Mrs. SudhaSahay, Principal, The Shri Ram School and Mrs. SeemaHanvey, Head, International Certification at Genesis Global School were the esteemed panelists for the research. The presentation began with insights on the secondary and primary research conducted by the team, which brought in light some amazing facts related to internet usage of school going children in category A, B and C schools. The panel brought in refreshing thoughts on challenges like cyber bullying, plagiarism, establishing work culture and ethics for an open ended discussion. Key issues like language barriers, technology and IT as an enabler and the impact on innovation by teachers due to Internet were touched upon by the panelists. Parents, teachers, students are the three stakeholders who have to be on the same page regarding digital learning in curriculum was the key take-away from the discussions.

 

The event was concluded with a Valedictory ceremony graced by Prof. Pathak and Prof. Gita Bajaj  where they shared their thoughts on the event. This was followed by prize distribution for Vincenza(won by Team from ISB Hyderabad )and Cerebro (won by Team from IMT Ghaziabad)and vote of thanks by Secretary of Delphique- SantoshGarbham. Gracing the ceremony Prof Gita Bajajsaid “Every platform should be used to scale up to a higher level and juniors should learn from this year and scale up the event to greater heights next year. The panel discussions on contemporary business issues featured leaders from various industries and being an audience to these itself is a learning experience for the students - besides the ones involved in research and presentation".

Prof Pathakappreciated the efforts put in by the students and said"It has been a very successful event, given that everything was to be done from scratch - including raising sponsorships. The event ended up with an overall surplus. I would specially like to thank the alumni who came out in support of the event - be it for reaching out and finalizing the panelists, or for sponsorship support”.
