Want to study at a top university in Canada? Here's the stepwise process on how to become an international student in Canada.

Step 1- Find a course and a university

Choosing a course and the university are the two initial factors for studying abroad. But, you need to identify which factor you need to consider at first. You can either go about finding a course first then, select the university that offers the course or, if you want to study at a particular university, you'll have to select a course that suits you from limited courses offered by that particular university.

Step 2- Ready all essential documents

Before making a university application, you must familiarise yourself with all requirements you may need along with your application.

Keep your documents ready beforehand, so nothing is left for last minute.

What are the requirements to study in Canada?

  1. 10th and intermediate equivalent   Degree and Provisional Certificates
  2. Proof of language
  3. Passport
  4. Statement of Purpose [SOP]
  5. Resume and Other Certificates [if any]
  6. Passport size photographs
  7. Letter of Recommendation [LOR]
  8. Step 3- Language proof (English and French)

Submitting a language proof is a mandatory requirement to obtain a Canadian study permit. Most universities in Canada accept IELTS scores as proof in the English language, but, if you want to take admission in Quebec province, you might need to provide language proof of French. Before you take the exam for any of the languages, check with your university about their requirements.

For English, you can give IELTS test- International English Language Testing System; whereas for French you can sit for TEF- Test d'Evaluation de Français

Step 4- Apply at you preferred study intake.

The primary intakes for most Canadian universities are fall and winter, however, some universities open limited admissions in summer intake as well. Do check the upcoming Canadian intakes before you apply.

Step 5- Obtain your Canadian student visa

Student visa in Canada is known as Study Permit. You will need the following documents to obtain your study permit.

  1. Acceptance letter from the institution/university
  2. Current passport
  3. Proof of financial support
  4. For students who would be studying in Quebec, will have to submit the ‘Certificat d’acceptation du Québec’ (CAQ), which your university will send to you.

Step 6- Final steps- planning your journey

Planning your arrival in a new country can be a lot to take in. It’s better to plan your arrival from your home country. Although Canada is no alien destination to Indian students, yet, you should plan your accommodation, student cards, etc. before you leave for Canada.
