Ritika Mathur

Sr. Manager

[ Scorecard : 188]

You could be a scapegoat in the hands of luck, or simply cake-walk the interview.  Believe it or not, a few simple checks and a conscious effort could make the process really smooth and aide you in impressing the distinguished lot across the table relatively easily. Here’s how:

1. Curriculum Vitae

Your CV is most likely to reach your interviewers before you do. You should always follow the KISS rule- Keep It Short and Simple while working on your CV.  Just remember the panel might ask you to validate the skills you have put in your resume. The motive for asking such questions is to judge your recall value, only if there is any, so don’t lie. Prepare for everything even the meaning the words that are there on your CV.

2.Dress up well!

Admit it, dressing up well does give you a confidence boost. Management professionals stand out in a crowd due their formal attire. This is the easiest bit in preparing yourself for an interview, so don’t mess it up. The hair, the clothes, the shoes, everything should be in accordance with the office environment and your profession. Though this alone will not get you the job, it will definitely be an ‘influencer’ of their decisions.

3.Posture

A manager directs plans & guides his/ her team & company to heights of success. And such a coveted responsibility should reflect a smart, outgoing and confident personality. Going for a job like this, your posture and attitude should be all of this and more. Not a nervous and jittery you. The question is why you should be nervous at all, after all, you have a degree or a certificate for the most sought after course in India! The interviewers have the ability to get under your skin and can sense those abnormal movements of fingers or even your eyeballs. So make sure that you are your best self at the interview.

4.Remember to sell yourself!

Treat yourself as a product and market yourself as was taught in your course. Highlight your USPs, making a long lasting impact on the panel. Take into account your target audience, who are of course your employers in this case, and mould your answers according to what works the best for them.Analyze your panel for the first few minutes, making use of casual answers and just when you realize what they want, hit them with your impressive responses.

5. Be Aware!Awareness is a skill that is essential for every profession. Have you read today’s headline of the newspaper you have subscribed for? What does the line below the logo of the newspaper say? Which page number does the sport section start from? Took time to answer? Gave a wrong response? Your chances of getting hired has already gone down by 15- 20%.How many steps did you have to climb from the reception to the interview hall? How many chairs are kept behind you? These questions might not be relevant but the interviewers are judging your awareness, so better not disappoint them.

6. Know your thing!:This is sort of a breather from all the other questions which leave you puzzled. Course relevant questions! Ideally, you should be able to answer all questions, unless you have ignored the course and marked your attendance at theatres, restaurants, bars, shopping malls or whatever.Whatever the case maybe, if you don’t know the answers, just tell the panel that you don’t know the answer. At least they will know that you respect their time and yours as well.

7. Be Innovative: You will be grilled with the same questions around your profile, the likes and dislikes, the hobbies, the past experience, the family background etc. This is to gauge how suited you are for the company’s profile in terms of people management. Always try to give innovative answers to these questions. There is also an option of presenting an innovative idea through your CV, this practice is gaining popularity lately.

8. Do Not Lie: Never underestimate the power of the people across the table. They have the nose of a dog and can smell a lie very easily. Also, it is difficult to keep up with the lies and remember them, failing which would definitely create awkward situation for you. So just remember not to lie, unless of course you can pull it off by backing it up with substantial stories.

9. Be prepared to answer off-beat questions!: How would you sell blue colour to a blind man? Name five uses of stapler without staples. If you were a Microsoft programme, which one would you be? How many cows are in Canada? Be prepared for such random questions. There is a catch in these questions; there is no right or wrong answer. It is up to you to mould the question according to your understanding. The test is not in the answer, it is the way you tackle the question. Don’t take a lot of time in figuring out what the correct answer is. It is basically a time test that will judge your reflexes. The best way is to come up with a witty reply that paints a smile on everyone’s face.

10. Social Media Profiles: We live in digital era and cannot ignore the fact that it has become an integral part of our lives, whether we like it or not. Your interviewers will go through all your social profiles, trust us. And if you try and project yourself as someone completely different from your social media profiles, you will get caught. So be yourself, and most importantly, convince them about your genuinity. If you are not an advisory of Social Media, tell them so, but back it up with a valid reason. Either ways, you need to be aware of it.

If you get eight out of these ten things correctly, you are sure to give others a run for their money. These are basics that should be a part of your daily routine, and they help you shine in interviews
