Key Differences between Management and Leadership

Professionals today must understand how and where to use different types of skillsets, and what distinguishes them from one another. Leadership and management are two core aspects of running a business toward growth and success. Many professionals will display a propensity for one or the other, and it is important to recognize the kind of person you are by identifying our own strengths as a management skill or a hr leadership skills. This not only lets us understand what type of skill may be applied where and when, but it provides the professional with a good idea of their strengths and weaknesses, which they may work on to achieve their own desired improvement that will keep them in good stead as they progress in their career. To that extent, let us examine some of the core differences that exist between management and leadership.

1.While managers create infrastructure and assigns roles and hierarchy, leaders give meaning and direction to their work by assisting them in developing company vision through effective interaction and communication, alongside inspiring them to achieve it.

2.Managers tend to focus more upon organization and structured planning, alongside staffing and project managing, etc. Leaders, however, play a more directive role when concerned with management, lending itself better to communication, teamwork, and persuasion. The primary difference is that one of them serves to create stability while the other aims to disrupt and cause change.

3.Leaders are given authority by their coworkers and team members for their vision and capabilities. Their authority is often based upon merit, with flexibility in roles. Managers obtain authority by virtue of their position and job role, which may be more of a result of their education and experience.

4.Managers aim to guide their teams towards operating within organizational policies and procedures, while leaders tend to break off from convention and are willing to take risks for the sake of the company and their team. This often separates many industry leaders from one another and even separates entire industries, which rely on one or the other.

5.Management is closer to being a science of practices and concepts that allow logical, informed, and precise decision making processes to help enterprises grow. Leaders, though, focus on exploring uncharted territories and alternative methodologies, if they believe it can positively impact the organization.

6.Managers are technically adept professionals involved in the organization or part of a core aspect of operations. Leaders deal more with motivating professionals to cover new ground as a collective and make experimenting a core aspect of their operations with a contextual approach.

7.Management deals with evaluation, analysis, performance management and bottomline growth. The forces behind leadership evaluate and develop individuals in manners that is not necessarily quantifiable. It deals with the potential and the “bigger picture” with qualitative development coming into focus. HR leaders are a good example of this.

8.Management can often be reactionary in nature, while phenomenon like leadership tend to be more proactive in nature.

9.Management depends on print or written engagement, while leadership depends on factors like direct interaction and verbal communication.
