Every PG student today checks whether the course he/she wants to pursue is recognized / approved or not. More particularly if it is a management course then is it approved by AICTE or further if not whether it is affiliated to any University or not. The recognition / approval of the course is the most important thing on the mind of the students and parents and very much valid.

There is also a thought in the minds of students & parents that each and every course should be approved by AICTE. But is it really the case?

Let’s look at who exactly is AICTE and what it does?

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was constituted in 1945 as an advisory body in all matters relating to technical education.

AICTE became a statutory body through an Act of Parliament 52, in 1987.  The Council, i.e. AICTE was established with a view to the proper planning and co-ordinated development of the technical education system throughout the country, the promotion of qualitative improvement of such education in relation to planned quantitative growth and the regulation and proper maintenance of norms and standards in the technical education system for matters connected therewith.

With Statutory powers, AICTE has taken necessary steps for planning, formulation and maintenance of norms and standards, accreditation, funding of priority areas, monitoring and evaluation of courses/programmes in the field of technical education to ensure coordinated and integrated development of technical education in the country.

Objectives of AICTE

· Promotion of Quality in Technical Education.

· Planning and Co-ordinated Development of Technical Education System.

· Regulations and maintenance of Norms and Standards.

AICTE approves only specific technical education programmes / courses. They are:

Programmes of education, research and training in:

· Engineering

· Technology

· Architecture

· Town planning

· Management

· Pharmacy

· Applied Arts and Crafts and

· Such other programmes or areas as the Central Government may, in consultation with the Council, by notification in the official Gazette, declare.

None of the objectives are met by AICTE. It is well known fact that it is full of dishonest persons. It is loosing its relevance very fast and it will be closed / replaced soon.
