Wild animals coming out of their natural habitats intruding into human settlement creating fear and destructions have become very frequent. These are warning signals the nature gives out which if not taken note of immediately will lead to unimaginable consequences causing huge loss and irreversible damages. It will be too late to prevent the day of the animals. The earlier we learn about the problems on hand with regard to the environmental damages that are taking place; the better will be for the human survival.
The urbanization of rural areas where agriculture is the predominant occupation of the rural people and the consequent demographic movement of rural population seeking new vistas for their agricultural activities by clearing the forest cover and further aggravated by wanton destruction of trees for economic exploitation and mining of earth for its commercial value has culminated in the soil erosion causing floods and desertification of arable land threatening agriculture and human habitation. The destruction of tropical forests, abode of heavy concentration of the world’s wild plant and animal species, have already been threatened or destroyed to a great extent fundamentally due to population growth, timber harvesting and exploitation of nature for commercial purposes. The nature has ordained that the human habitation, plant and animal kingdom are to co-exist for the preservation of this world and protection of the ecological balance in tact.
Changes in eco system and bio diversity affect globally crossing all geographical boundaries. The grim story is that thousands of lakes and great areas of soil had been poisoned by sulphurous fumes released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels were burnt. There is great concern about increasing carbon dioxide build-up in the atmosphere due to burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and changes in the land use. It is predicted that in 60 years time the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will have doubled and the average world temperature will have increased by four to five degrees which is sufficient to melt Antarctic ice to raise the level of ocean by fifteen feet flooding many of our cities through tsunamis. Forests are not just a source of timber and forest products. They perform a vide range of social and ecological functions besides enriching the lives of the forest dwellers and their cultural integrity, by providing a habitat for a hosts of plant and wild lives. Bio-diversity which is a combination of genetic information, natural communities and eco systems, provide material wealth and natural heritage to the world which should be handed over to the future generations. The only way to save the natural world from further degradation is through conservation pursued as a permanent and committed policy and not by way of expediency.
Environmental problems are social problems because they begin with people as the cause and end with people as victims. The environmental degradation is due purely to ignorance and apathy. Exploitation of the natural world with its abundant resources has been plundered by the unscrupulous business community for the profit of the few at the expense of the ecological disaster. For the business community, the natural world is a part of their business preposition and deal in such a way unmindful of the devastating consequences it is going to create. These people create a bad environment and bad environment brings out worst in people. Man and nature are made for each other and if one is hurt, the other is also automatically wounded. Unless drastic steps are taken to arrest the deteriorating trend and to change the people’s thinking and outlook to understand the importance of conservation and that too without any further delay, the exploitation and degradation of the environment will continue with nature’s fury taking a very heavy toll by way of destruction and devastation endangering the ecological balance which will prove detrimental to human existence.
The problems are already on hand and what is required is urgent action as the time at the disposal is very short. Regional and commercial interests exert tremendous pressure to mould government views ignoring the long term interest and the welfare of future generation. The task of environmental protection can be tackled only on a global scale and would require substantial investment. Only a strong and well informed public opinion can alone make the governments to come out sternly and firmly to undertake the task of preserving the ecological balance and to put an end to the diabolical exploitation of the nature by the greedy and devious vested interest business community. A strong and well informed public opinion has to be created combined with devoted people who work enthusiastically and energetically to protect the world from exploitation and pollution by willful and deliberate destruction of the natural resources including animal and plant kingdom for the profit of the insatiable business community. Ultimately it is the entire enlightened and knowledgeable public who can save the earth from its destruction and obliteration. The future is in our hands and depends on our sincerity of purpose and purity of our actions either to make our world a paradise for all to live or a barren desolate globe of never ending stress of barren land.
To quote Sir Edmund Hillary “My remaining hope is the amazing adaptability of human beings and the astonishing resilience of nature itself. Certainly the world and its human inhabitants are both changing, but we can hope that all the changes will not be bad. Perhaps humankind will start walking firmly in the direction of reconstruction and a better way of life. May be there is a good future for us all yet.”
